A Bookchat about Darkness Calls the Tiger with Janyre Tromp

Janyre Tromp joins KyLee for a chat about God’s faithfulness, snacking and reading, missionaries in WW 2, and her latest release Darkness Calls the Tiger. Don’t forget to enter to win a copy of this great book!

About the author

Janyre Tromp is a veteran book editor by day and writer of historical novels with a healthy dose of lyrical intrigue at night. She’s the best-selling author of Shadows in the Mind’s Eye and co-author of both O Little Town and It’s a Wonderful Christmas. Her books were named a 2023 Arkansas Gem by the Arkansas State Library and Honorable Mention for Romance by Foreword Indies. And that all happens from her unfinished basement when she’s not hanging out with her family, two troublesome cats, and slightly eccentric Shetland Sheepdog.

We have had the pleasure of chatting on the show before, but also in real life. I tell you this lady has a reputation in the writing community for kindness, hard work and professionalism. I would describe you as quirky, family-oriented, and fun. Yet your books deal with heavy themes, as we see in Shadows in the Mind’s Eye – a suspenseful post-WW2 story about dealing with life after the war–and now Darkness Calls the Tiger, a story about missionaries facing Japanese attacks shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

  1. We’re going to get up close and personal fast, how does a happy-go-lucky mother and writer create such authentic and riveting tales that tackle painful and gritty topics?
  2. Can you share how God has been especially faithful in blessing you?
  3. If you could spend 1 day reading, what location would you choose and what snack?
  4. Is there anything especially interesting that you haven’t covered in other interviews that you could share with us or perhaps there is something God has laid on your heart that you would like to share with your readers?

About the book: Darkness Calls the Tiger

After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Imperial Japan devours the southern portion of Burma, intent on taking over mainland Asia. Unaware of the coming darkness, Kailyn Moran drifts in her role as the only daughter of a widowed missionary.

As whispers of war snake through the Kachin mountains, Kai’s father is convinced God will protect the mission. He entrusts the village to her and the kind yet inexperienced new missionary, Ryan McDonough, while he makes routine visits to neighboring villages.

War descends like a tempest upon the mountain peaks, and an unbreakable bond forms between Kailyn and Ryan as they unite to provide solace to both villagers and the flood of refugees. Despite their tireless efforts, a brutal enemy shatters almost everything they love, pushing Kailyn to embark on a path of unrestrained vengeance.

Afraid he’s losing the woman he loves, Ryan fights to protect Kai from the deadly consequences of her choices. But in the face of destruction, can he convince her of the power and freedom of forgiveness?

  1. What legends do you refer to?
  2. How does faith come into play in this story?
  3. What is one special connection between Kailyn and Ryan?
  4. What’s next for your writing?

Review of Shadows in the Mind’s Eye by Janyre Tromp

THE BOOK

Charlotte Anne Mattas longs to turn back the clock. Before her husband, Sam, went to serve his country in the war, he was the man everyone could rely on–responsible, intelligent, and loving. But the person who’s come back to their family farm is very different from the protector Annie remembers. Sam’s experience in the Pacific theater has left him broken in ways no one can understand–but that everyone is learning to fear.

Tongues start wagging after Sam nearly kills his own brother. Now when he claims to have seen men on the mountain when no one else has seen them, Annie isn’t the only one questioning his sanity and her safety. If there were criminals haunting the hills, there should be evidence beyond his claims. Is he really seeing what he says, or is his war-tortured mind conjuring ghosts?

Annie desperately wants to believe her husband. But between his irrational choices and his nightmares leaking into the daytime, she’s terrified he’s going mad. Can she trust God to heal Sam’s mental wounds–or will sticking by him mean keeping her marriage at the cost of her own life.

THE REVIEW

Janyre’s debut novel showcases a beautifully woven story filled with uncertainty, redemption, revenge, and forgiveness. Each character seems to go through their own transformation by the end, but this story isn’t only character-driven but also plot-driven. This story centers around Annie, a woman learning to live with this new war-torn version of her husband, Sam, while her husband battles the demons he brought back with him from the war. But aside from the inner struggle is the suspicious activity near their house and the shady criminal underbelly that rules the nearby town. No one believes Sam when he shares what he witnesses, and when he follows the trail of clues to do the right thing, he drags everyone he loves into the middle of a dangerous maelstrom.

If you’re in the mood for a realistic depiction of mid-century slice of life with a side helping of mystery, then Shadows in the Mind’s Eye is a great read for you!
